     Pro

          a) The symbols function as directions for movements of articulation

          b) A series of symbols suggest speech as movement

          c) Symbols are synthetic; a few elements can combined for thousands of sounds

          d) There is a logic to the relationship of the symbols

          e) The system allows the transcription of sounds not used in any language

     Con

          a) The system is known by only a handful of people; there is no audience as of

               now

          b) The symbols don't graphically represent the movements of articulation

          c) The system requires agreement on the locations represented by the numbers

(4) Graphic System

     Pro

           a) This is a graphic version of the Number System and thus is a step less abstract

     Con

           a) The system is in the earliest stages of development - it hasn't been "field

                 tested" and put to use

           b) The system requires creation of a grid to clarify the symbols

           c) The symbols seem to require more space than do those of other systems
